Spotify under fire as streaming payments slammed

When Spotify arrived on the scene everyone was overjoyed that music streaming may be the way forward for a music business struggling against the tide of illegal downloads. And, without doubt the service has revolutionised the consumption of music as we know it.

However, over the past few weeks some controversy has arisen surrounding the payments that artists receive per stream of their tracks with Lady Gaga reportedly earning just over £100 for streaming of her worldwide smash hit Pokerface. With this in mind, it is difficult to see how an emerging, newly signed or unsigned band could ever make any income from streaming their music, and it also raises the question of how the music industry is to ever successfully move away from physical formats.
