With record labels still taking a majority cut from streaming revenues, CIAM are lobbying on behalf of music creators around the world for fairer splits when it comes to royalties and more transparency in the distribution of these splits.
Record companies have enjoyed a larger cut since the days of producing CDs, vinyl and cassettes as much of the onus was on them for producing and distributing the finished product, however in the digital age and specifically with the introduction of music streaming this divide is still employed although not necessarily with such good reason.
CIAM are asking for 80% of streaming royalties to go to rightsholders and more transparency in the negotiations between record labels and streaming services which currently artists and songwriters are left out of. Let's hope a change and fairer times may be afoot...
