News: 13th June 2014 by Louise Dodgson under Artist Managers, Finance, Law & Music Business, Record Labels

Independent music companies looking to secure funding from the BPI and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Music Export Growth Scheme have until Monday 16th June to submit their applications.
The Music Export Growth Scheme, funded by UKTI, the Government organisation that supports UK business overseas, and run by BPI, the trade body that represents British recorded music businesses, will make available grants ranging from £5,000 to £50,000 over the next two and a half years to independent music companies to help them market British music overseas.
Encouraging eligible companies to apply, BPI Director of Independent Membership, Chris Tams said “The Music Export Growth Scheme has hit a high note with many UK independent labels and music companies who now understand how valuable the funding on offer can be in helping artists to break into overseas markets.
“And it’s encouraging to see that Government too has realised the potential for growth of the UK’s independent music sector by choosing to back the efforts of the BPI in supporting the indie community.
“I’m keen to see more applications from music businesses across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England to ensure that the untapped potential contained within our borders can be spring-boarded to an international audience.”
Announced in October 2013 by the Prime Minister more than £500,000 has already been granted to 28 different music companies across the UK with acts spanning the genres of indie, rock, classical, hip hop, soul, acid punk, dance, pop and urban. Artists who have benefitted from the Scheme so far are Afrikan Boy, Band of Skulls, Beth Jeans Houghton, Bo Ningen, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Charli Taft, Christian Gregory, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Drenge, Filthy Boy, Fred V & Grafix, George Benjamin, Holy Mountain, Julia Biel, Lulu James, Melt Yourself Down, Metronomy, Public Service Broadcasting, Savage Messiah, Skinny Lister, Slow Club, Smoke Fairies, The Crookes, The Temperance Movement, Throwing Snow, Transition, Young Fathers and Zara McFarlane.
A further £2 million will be made available over the next two years as part of the Government’s plan to encourage 100,000 small businesses to export. The Scheme will build on the success story of British music by supporting independent labels – who accounted for a quarter (25.1%) of all artist albums sold in the UK in 2013 - as they seek to catapult artists that are export-ready into overseas markets.
