News: 12th June 2014 by Louise Dodgson under Artist Managers, Music Training & Careers

Born To Be Wide has announced its final two events of its Off The Record series, which features workshops for young musicians and those interested in working in the music business. They will take place on Saturday 28 June at the Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock and Sunday 29 June at the Roxy Assembly, Edinburgh.

Supported by the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI), which is administered by Creative Scotland, Off The Record is open to anyone aged between 14-25, with key industry figures providing essential advice on subjects including releasing, promotion and organising/getting gigs.

The Kilmarnock event will be delivered in partnership with East Ayrshire Leisure with speakers including: Jim Gellatly (XFM Scotland), Olaf Furniss (Born To Be Wide Director/The Scotsman), Michael Lambert (Born To Be Wide Director/artist manager), Marc Strain (Fatherson), Halina Rafai (Podcart/Olive Grove Records), Ally Gray (EmuBands) and Richy Muirhead (Scottish Alternative Music Awards).

Taking part in the Edinburgh event are: Olaf Furniss (Born To Be Wide Director/The Scotsman), Michael Lambert (Born To Be Wide Director/artist manager), Tallah Brash (The Electric Circus), Andy Loban (Gerry Loves Records) and Ally Gray (EmuBands). Additional speakers to be announced.

Admission to each event is £2 (including lunch) and tickets must be bought in advance from the website below, or in person from the Palace Theatre (9 Green Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 3BN) or Tickets Scotland (127 Rose St, Edinburgh, EH2 3DT).

A parental consent form is required from attendees aged under 18 which can be downloaded from: http://borntobewide.co.uk/s/Off-The-Record-Consent-Form.pdf

Also included in the price is a free release worth £25, via Scotland's leading digital distribution company EmuBands. This covers Amazon, iTunes, Spotify and most other online stores and streaming services.

Born To Be Wide Director, Michael Lambert said: “Our previous Off The Record events have proved extremely popular. There is a real desire to learn about the music industry, and Off The Record provides a unique opportunity to learn from professionals and meet those working in the modern music business.”

Co-Director, Olaf Furniss, adds: “Several attendees from the earlier Off The Records have gone on to organise gigs and release music, putting into practice what they have learned at the events.”

Leonie Bell, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said: “For young musicians, and young people who want to work in the music industry behind the scenes, the Off the Record events are an unmissable opportunity to meet, learn from and be inspired by experienced music professionals working in Scotland. They’re also a great place for the young people to share aspirations and ideas with each other. These connections will prove invaluable as they take the next steps in the music industry."
