Music Producers Guild launches first in series of DIY record label sessions
News: 13th October 2010 by Louise Dodgson under Record Labels, Recording & Production, Selling & Distributing Your Music

In response to the changing landscape of the record industry, more producers and artists are looking to start their own record, publishing and production companies. To support this, the Music Producers Guild (UK) is holding a series of networking events that are designed to investigating the different facets of starting your own DIY record company.
These events will look into the different disciplines involved and will feature invited representatives from the PRS, PPL, MPA, AIM, BPI, BASCA and Musicians Union, along with legal advisers and representatives of the ancillary industries involved such as aggregators, distributors, publicists and pluggers. Those attending will have the opportunity to explore the ins and outs of setting up their own company and some of the advantages and pitfalls of independent sales and distribution. The events will also look into the advent of the 360 degree deal and how it impacts on the activities of the DIY company.
MPG Chairman Steve Levine says: “The response from all the participating organisations has been encouraging. We can all see how co-operation between all the elements of the music industry will be vital in its continued success, and that success can only be sustained if we adapt to the new digital economy.”
The first event takes place at 7pm on November 11th at London’s Metropolis Studios. This informal seminar, moderated by MPG director and producer Tommy D, is designed to find out what people want to know about the process of DIY. It will include guest speakers from AIM, The Association of Independent Music, The Musicians Union, BASCA, and some of the MPG’s own members who have gone down the DIY route themselves.
Future events will then focus on specific areas of setting up your own record company leading up to a cross organisational event enabling those attending to meet with different members of organisations with similar goals but from a varied stand point.
Tickets for the first event cost £20, or £15 for members of AIM, MU, BASCA, APRS, MMF, Music Tank and FAC. Usual MPG discounts apply. Early booking is advised for those who want to secure a place as this event will be opened up to other organisations as well as the MPG. To obtain a ticket please visit www.mpg.org.uk/diy_event
