Start the Evolution Weekender in style

News: 27th April 2010 by Louise Dodgson under

Generator and NARC. present Evolution Emerging, 2010’s biggest event for emerging North East music which is taking place this year on Saturday 29 May.

2009 saw a new and exciting addition to the Evolution Weekender and we’re pleased to announce that we’re back on 2010 with an even bigger and better event, featuring 25 artists (plus DJ sets) across 6 venues in the Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle.

Last year’s event, programmed by Generator and leading North East music magazine NARC., featured a headline set from Field Music side-project The Week That Was. This year’s line-up reflects the vast array of emerging talent from all styles of music across the North East, and features a secret special guest headline slot from one of the country’s most talked about new bands - to be announced nearer to the event.

Earlier in the year, we called out for regional bands and solo artists (from any genre) to apply to play and the response surprised everyone.  We received over 220 artist submissions and the standard of entries proves just how thriving the North East music scene is right now.

Selected by a panel of regional music industry experts, highlights include DJ sets from Sunderland’s finest Frankie and the Heartstrings who are currently receiving lots of airplay and causing a buzz with their single Tender/Want You Back, which is out on April 26.

Let’s Buy Happiness will prepare for their Glastonbury appearance with a set at The Cluny, whilst Viva City are set to follow up their trip to Austin, Texas and SxSW with a gig on home turf, headlining the stage at The Tyne.

This year Evolution Emerging spans many genres and mixes things up, with hip hop from Hellfire Club and Okan & Silvar, electronic sounds from Trafik and metal from We Are Knuckle Dragger and Laconia, who are making a popular return after a two year absence.

Brilliant Mind claim a rare honour by being the only act on the lineup to have played consecutive years as they grace the stage at The Cumberland Arms.

All gigs are free and are all timed to run in six venues in the Ouseburn Valley; The Cluny, Cluny 2, Star & Shadow Cinema, The Tyne, The Tanners and The Cumberland Arms, on Saturday 29 May.

Joe Frankland, Generator’s Musician Support Manager said: “The lineup this year is outstanding, we’ve had so many people request to play and there were some really strong acts that came forward. We’ve assembled a bill that reflects the strength and depth of the North East music scene, to give people a taste of the variety of music being produced in our region at the moment.

“With the number of submissions this year we were able to choose the very best acts plying their trade in various genres rather than picking bands to match particular styles and we’re really pleased with the results.”
