Spotify has made a substantial impact on the music world in these times of piracy and illegal downloads, but unfortunately for the smaller independent labels and artists the streaming service has not proved to be the saviour of digital music as was initially hoped. The revenue generated from streamed music falls short of the mark if you cannot rack up listens into the tens of thousands. So is Spotify ultimately a service worth using for the indies who may prefer to encourage download sales which will bring in more money for the artist? This article looks at why indies have little choice but to take what they can get from streamed music...
