It has taken a while for digital record sales to offset the drop in physical sales, and now a new record is set to be broken as digital single sales top 100 million. According to The Official Charts Company, the reason behind the mammoth sales of chart-topping singles looks to be down to the new-found longevity of sales. A song set to fall out of the charts can be heard again on TV programmes such as X Factor and prompt many download sales, extending the lifespan of songs and giving them the opportunity to rack up more sales than ever before.
