Are magazine releases the future?

Prince did it in 2007 via a free covermount in The Times, and now more artists jump on the bandwagon to release their new music via magazine deals. Blondie and Alice Cooper all have release arrangements via magazines in place, the first will be happening in July with the latter following around Halloween.
They have taken Prince's groundbreaking covermount to the next level - the releases are set to cost around £14.99 however, included with the album, in what is being branded a 'fan pack', will be a nicely produced magazine about the artist in question, plus assorted merchandise such as badges, posters and so on. The alternative for fans of the digital format will be an iPad app with exclusive video interviews and features. Could this newly packaged music bumper pack tempt consumers to part with their cash for more added value, rather than opting to download illegally? Time will tell...
