Generator launches a new music enterprise course

News: 31st May 2011 by Louise Dodgson under Finance, Law & Music Business, Music Training & Careers

Generator, the UK’s leading Music Development Agency, has developed a unique qualification for learners wanting to start or expand a music business.

The Managing a Music Business Enterprise (MMBE) diploma is the only bespoke fully accredited qualification for those looking to establish their own music business. MMBE is a 13 week entry-level programme to support those who want to be an artist manager, a promoter, a booking agent, run their own record label or publishing company.

The development of MMBE has been supported by UK Music who are backing the launch of the course and its national rollout during 2011.

Feargal Sharkey, Chief Executive of UK Music, said: “We have supported Generator’s development of the new programme and are delighted it is now ready to be delivered throughout the UK. This innovative qualification will help new music businesses establish themselves and contribute to the growth of the UK music industry. The fact they will come out with an investment ready business plan as well as a qualification makes this a ‘real world’ business training programme.”

Generator, based in the North East of England, is delivering the course in partnership with Gateshead College beginning on 30th June and  as well as learners achieving a full Level 3 Diploma they will develop their own business plan that they can implement when they leave the programme.

Generator has already identified key areas where it will run the MMBE nationally and following the first run at Gateshead, it will be rolled out to Yorkshire, Manchester, Liverpool, South West, West Midlands and London from September.

Damian Baetens, Director of Business Development at Generator said: ‘’Generator has delivered unaccredited training to music businesses for over 10 years. The development process to fully accredit and award MMBE makes it a more advanced programme than anything we have offered before or is currently in the marketplace. MMBE has been fully approved by Creative & Cultural Skills and placed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) unlike any other music industry qualification at this level. This makes the qualification eligible for adult learner funding therefore Generator can bring a contribution towards costs for learners from Skills Funding Agency.

As well as the skills sector approval Generator also has existing and tested delivery partnerships with industry specialists and leaders for specific units e.g. Music Ally for digital marketing and Woodwork Music for licensing and synchronization. A purpose built online learning zone has been developed, laden with fully approved bespoke lesson plans, course notes and enterprise toolkits, as well as monitoring and reporting systems to enable remote administration and delivery. This will provide ongoing support and resources to both learners and delivery partners through the UK.

MMBE is being delivered at Gateshead College on 30th June 2011. For further information please visit the link below or contact Jonny Gray on 0191 255 4469 / email [email protected]
