MTV prepares to launch music discovery tool

The idea behind MTV's latest initiative, MTV Music Meter, is to highlight those acts that are starting to breakthrough before they really hit the mainstream, presumably so you can quickly jump on board and look cool in front of all your friends as you tell them how you loved Justin Bieber when he released his very first EP at the age of 5. But mostly, I think the aim is to introduce new artists which have started creating a buzz to a wider audience.
The meter relys on technology The Echo Nest which gathers data from blogs, social media, and other online sources to create it's countdown of what's trending at the moment.
