AIM & BPI get environmental!!
News: 26th July 2010 by Louise Dodgson under Finance, Law & Music Business, Record Labels

AIM and BPI have joined together to commission research into the carbon impact of a switch to digital promo delivery by the independent sector.
Conducted by industry organisation Julie's Bicycle, the research is also funded by ACM Guildford, Soundcloud, Fastrax, Fatdrop, Bomber Music Bella Union, Ninja Tune, Lo Recordings, Phoenix Music & McNally Consulting.
AIM and BPI have requested their members complete a survey on how many promos are currently being sent out physically and digitally. Physical promos are something that many in the music industry have identified as wasteful - not only in economic terms, but also in environmental terms. This study of carbon impact will help support to the campaign to move away from physical promos towards a more efficient, cheaper and more environmentally friendly digital method of track delivery.
Gavin O'Shea of AIM member label Lo Recordings, states: “Presenting the statistics is a vital first step in persuading the recipients of this plastic avalanche to adopt different ways to accept our music.”
Alison Tickell, Director of Julie's Bicycle states: "Everyone feels strongly about the wastage in physical promo distribution, and this research, which builds on our previous work looking at CD packaging, will identify the scale of the problem and the change we can make by increasing digital distribution. We are really pleased to be working with independent record labels and also excited to work with the digital delivery companies - these digital methods have their own carbon impacts too, and it's really important we focus on efficiencies in the digital space as well."
The research will be complete in September 2010.
