German collection society refuses to back down to YouTube

Do you remember the whole commotion last year between YouTube and PRS For Music? YouTube disputed the license payments which PRS For Music requests for play of music videos via the site and it resulted in videos being pulled from the website. Then the record labels got upset about their music videos being dragged off the site and in turn losing revenue.
This article looks at who actually feels the brunt of these fallings-out, typically the songwriter. However, in Germany the equivalent of collection society PRS For Music, Gema, is standing firm against YouTube and has joined forces with other collection societies to increase their bargaining power.
