Live chat - Your questions answered by the Musicians’ Union

Blog by Louise Dodgson under Artist Managers, Creative & Branding, Finance, Law & Music Business, Live, Media, Music Publishing, Music Training & Careers, Record Labels, Recording & Production, Selling & Distributing Your Music

Next Tuesday 27th June between 1pm and 2pm we shall welcome Jo Laverty, Regional Organiser for London, from the Musicians’ Union to get involved in our live Q&A session with all you unsigned and emerging acts out there!

If you’ve ever had any questions about what the MU do; what membership entails, how they work for their members… or if you’re in need of some more general advice about getting paid and making sure you get a fair deal as an unsigned artist, getting started with your music career, booking gigs or finding funding, then Jo will be on hand to help you out.

About the MU
The Musicians’ Union (MU) is the only trade union for musicians in the UK. From rock bands to classical quartets, songwriters to session players, the MU represents over 30,000 musicians across the 4 nations.

They work for members by negotiating with all major employers in the industry, as well as offering advice and services tailored to freelance musicians’ needs at every stage of their career. That could be career advice, networking and training opportunities. Or help with a contract for a gig, recording, songwriting, touring or merchandising. It might be legal advice and assistance. Or help chasing unpaid fees – they recovered more than £250,000 for members last year alone!

The Union campaigns for fair pay, arts funding and to keep music live. With 30,000 members, the MU can influence policy in all Parliaments and Assemblies. Lobbying successes include the Live Music Act and its extension, which have made it easier to put on gigs. They’re also fighting to protect musicians’ rights during Brexit, to protect music venues, and for a fair internet for performers so musicians are paid fairly for use of their work.

GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR QUESTIONS FOR MUSICIANS’ UNION!
