The Unsigned Guide Spotlight: March

Blog by Louise Dodgson under Artist Managers, Creative & Branding, Finance, Law & Music Business, Live, Media, Music Publishing, Music Training & Careers, Record Labels, Recording & Production, Selling & Distributing Your Music

We sincerely hope you’re ready for some fresh sounds as our March Spotlight is primed to deliver!

Dayas – ‘You See’
Creating House music with a diverse twist and an injection of alternative features on every track, Dayas’ sound certainly brings an exciting essence to dance. He elaborates on the development of our chosen track ‘You See’:

“I was on a train and thought about using a simple melody/riff repetitively and have it evolve and gradually build over time whilst also incorporating 80s style bass lines, so once I got to my studio I sat down and started writing it. At first I loved the track but after a week of working on it I had no idea what to do with it, so it just sat collecting dust on my hard drive till about 3 months down the line where I opened it and finally knew what I had to do.“

Having supported the likes of Friend Within, Frequency, Ko Kane, Second City, Mella Dee and Kry Wolf in a DJ capacity during the past 12 months, plus playing a slot at InsomniFest in Leeds, Dayas was privileged to join the Sessions family in their movement through Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Hull and Ibiza.

Currently working on new originals, remixes and collaborations with various artists, although Dayas is unable to disclose specifics just yet, rest assured that he plans on having a strong catalogue of tracks ready for Outbreak Festival in May so he can fill sets with his own creations.

Morain – ‘Alive’
Wakefield quartet Morain deftly brandish a big and bold, reverby anthemic guitar sound. Playing live is something they consider to be their most rewarding experience; fortunate as they spent a lot of the end of last year touring, with their gig at KOKO in London being a particular highlight and the memories of playing to an enthused audience will be cherished by the band for a long time to come.

Hitting the road again definitely factors into their 2015 plans but for now Morain are knuckling down and getting as much written as possible, ready for the recording and release of some new material later on in the year. Whilst we wait with baited breath, enjoy their video for ‘Alive’, featured just last week on BT Sports’ ‘Global Goals’ programme.

Jungle Brown – ‘What’s On Your Mind’
UK hip-hop group Jungle Brown have grown up performing together and once they made their creative collective official and began recording at their own studio, their creativity has soared, producing sample based hip-hop with a modern twist on production.

Inspired by the veterans of the 90s, they aim to restore the balance of conscious UK hip-hop whilst being true to their migrant roots and delivering a positive message.

Last year’s highlight for Maear, MoSik, Ric* and Tony Bones was performing at a 2 day beach festival in France and more exciting opportunities are likely afoot as this year sees their EP launch during the next couple of months and plenty more live dates to come. Make sure you stay locked in to see what Jungle Brown have in-store.

Fur Cough – ‘Digress’
Drawing on influences ranging from P J Harvey, At The Drive-In, The Jesus Lizard and Lhasa de Sela, London band Fur Cough are making an impression with their latest single ‘Digress’.

Having played the Alternative Great Escape festival and Camden Rocks last year, so far 2015 has seen them in the studio working on new material with producer Joe Foster (The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream). With track ‘A Palaver' lined up for release next, you can also look out for a spate of forthcoming shows plus a tour in Germany later in the year. You can take a look at their video for ‘Digress’ here…

Alexandra Jayne – ‘Troubadour’
Inspired by gigging and experiences as a musician, our Spotlight selection ‘Troubadour’ reveals Alexandra’s distinctive homegrown and soulful sound.

Receiving lots of support from her local radio station, BBC Radio Shropshire, Alexandra has played a number of live sessions for them, but nothing could prepare her for support slot for James Blunt at the Birmingham NIA last November.

She plays at Liverpool Acoustic Festival this March, then returns to the studio to create some new material, before emerging for festival bookings this summer.
