Are you ready for 5 tracks that are hotter than the sun?! Thought so! Behold our Spotlight selections for October, a mixed bag that’s guaranteed to delight your ears.
Marsicans – Chivalry
Leeds based Marsicans knew they were onto a winner with track Chivalry, written and first performed at Reading Festival in the space of just a week. Having supported the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen and storming the festival circuit with appearances at Leeds & Reading, Bingley Music Live, plus slots at Live At Leeds over the past 3 years, their chirpy indie meets dirty pop sound is enough to get any crowd in the mood for merriment.
The Chivalry EP was released last month and EP track Terrapin even received its first national airplay on BBC Radio 1. A perfect fit if you ask us! The four-piece have recently finished recording some new tracks with Mickey Dale from Embrace so keep your ear to the ground for those, but in the meantime we urge you to take a look at their .
Trojan Horse – Paper Bells

With a sound firmly rooted in rock but informed by many different strands of the musical ether ranging from 1960s psychedelia, jazz, avant-garde, electronica, heavy metal, hip hop and folk to classical compositions, early 80's hardcore punk, dadaism, surrealism, Marxism, Trotskyism, television theme tunes, bird song and pneumatic drills, you can see why Trojan Horse feel comfortable with describing their eclectic tastes as simply ‘weird rock’.
Chosen track Paper Bells was penned for their new album 'World Turned Upside Down', and its genesis came from the band’s desire to try something completely different, a craving it seems highly unlikely that these chaps would ever shy away from. Mindful to challenge themselves by keeping things simple, the song developed a driving force and pulse of its own and most of the backing track was recorded live in one take.
Perpetuated by a dedicated fanbase and loyal support which the band feels trumps any gig that they could play or any amount of sales they may generate, it’s clear to see their sole purpose is the sheer love of creating music. That said, we felt their recent dates supporting The Fall were definitely worth a mention and respectful nod.
The new album is due for release on 13th October through Bad Elephant Music but you can jump ahead of the crowd and . Also check out which won’t be featured on the album, plus details of their Autumn tour on the band website below.
Mothers – Honey

Intensely heavy yet charmingly melodic, Mothers (formerly Aeroplane Flies High) say of their sound: “Our songs are nice, we just play them loud and noisy!” The track Honey is about people being too afraid to be themselves and 'sticking' to other people, hence the name.
Undertaking their first headline tour this summer, the three-piece have developed a taste for life on the road and will be embarking on yet another series of dates throughout November and December, kicking off at Lancaster’s Yorkshire House on 28th November. If crowd surfing and an uproarous flurry of arms and legs is your kind of gig experience, then make sure you check out
Currently releasing music on Snaketown Records, an album is also in the pipeline so keep eyes and ears peeled for what is bound to be a noise-packed, energetic offering.
Of Empires – Gimme What I Need

Channelling the tones and gestures of the late 60s with a present day awareness, Brighton based Of Empires are adept at blending uplifting melodies with darker lyrical undertones. Although the song oozes carefree, upbeat vibes, lyrically it expresses the desire of someone wanting to the escape the depraved and bleak pockets of their existence and get across to the other side.
Recording their debut EP offering ‘Stranger Sensations’ is the achievement the four-piece are most proud of to date and it definitely makes the strong initial statement they intended. With plans to connect and engage, plenty of shows lie ahead for Of Empires, as well as music videos and writing fresh material, this band are primed for fine things.
Rime Suspex – My Getaway
Merging R&B, urban and pop essences and drawing influence from everything from old school hip-hop and soul to The Beatles, Rime Suspex have an indisputable feel-good, buoyant quality and chosen Spotlight track My Getaway is an ideal example of this.
Hailing from Lancashire and comprising members Vivid (rapper), Miranda (vocalist), Rory (guitarist) and Jack (producer), the four-piece have used their short time together wisely, organising their own tours, travelling the country and playing charity gigs. Their latest release, Contrast EP, was unveiled last week and you can enjoy a . If you like what you hear, ther EP is available for download via and the store.
