Success in the Music Business - Amber Rimell: Co -Owner, Tawbox

Blog by Music Business School under Music Training & Careers

Graduating from the London Studio Centre as a dancer, Tawbox co-owner Amber Rimell danced professionally for around 10 years moving up the ladder from dancer to dance captain, and finally to choreographer. Her interested in the business side of music got her thinking that there might be a way to make a living by combining her love of dance with her love of the theatricality used in the spectacular shows she’d witnessed at music festivals.

She formed the collective, Tawbox with her creative partner in the business, Bronski and together they began to offer the combination of creative direction and technical production design that they had between them. However approaching and presenting to the level of artists and managers that they wanted on their client list meant that Rimell needed to grow her knowledge of some sectors of the music business that she had not interacted with before.

"I really wanted to take things to the next level," Rimell told us, "I thought that if I could merge my experience as a dancer with a solid understanding of the business side of music then we would have a viable plan to grow our business." A long course with a high price tag was not an option that Rimell wanted go with, so the short-course offered at Music Business School seemed like a great way to quickly power up the young dancers music business skills and knowledge.

Run by music industry veteran Steve Melhuish, the Music Business School which is based at the London School of Sound in Clapham, gives students a fast track understanding of the music business over 16 weeks with classes one day per week. A key value proposition for students is the unique guest speaker programme that brings working music business executives into the classroom to work with the students.

"I learnt a huge amount at Music Business School. Gaining an appreciation of the many different jobs and areas of the business and how they fit together is a huge asset when you want to set up your own music business."  Rimell also said that gaining hands on experience with the guest lecturers each week was highly valuable.

Rimell is currently co-creative director for Rita Ora and she recently choreographed Elle Goulding’s The X-Factor appearance. Add to this the services and technical support used by artists such as Little Mix, The Wanted, Pixie Lott and The Saturdays and the future for Tawbox is looking great. Steve from Music Business School says that "Amber was certainly a standout student and I’m glad that we are part of her story and we like to think we’re part of her success."

The MMBE course at Music Business School starts its next course in May 2014. Applications are now open for both the accreditation and non-accreditation options.
