The Unsigned Guide Spotlight: March

Blog by Michelle Lloyd under Artist Managers, Creative & Branding, Finance, Law & Music Business, Live, Media, Music Publishing, Music Training & Careers, Record Labels, Recording & Production, Selling & Distributing Your Music

Well it looks like Spring has finally sprung; the nights are getting longer and the end of the dreary Winter is in sight. And what better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than with a whole host of new musical treats? As ever we’ve picked five of our favourite tracks as submitted by our lovely members and thrown them into a snazzy little blog for you. Aren’t we good eh? Behold the March Spotlight here.

CHPLN – ‘White Snow’
CHPLN are South London multi-pop duo and childhood friends Dali Bor and Pippo Vari. This, their debut track, has already set tongues wagging with its amalgamation of soul and electronica and nods to the likes of Hot Chip.

Having changed their name from Chaplin to the à la mode CHPLN, the boys set out to promote themselves and have reaped the rewards with airplay both in the UK at the BBC and across the channel in France.

With festivals pencilled in for the summer and a remix by Shy Luv to their name already, CHPLN are set for big things, and with a promo that features synths, dogs and disco balls we’d say they’re onto a winner.

Forthcoming dates include Notting Hill Arts Club on 6th March and The Victoria on 15th March.

Run Young Lovers - ‘Lighthouse’
Run Young Lovers are a five piece from Brighton who have supported the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, The Sunshine Underground and Little Comets. Just as infectious as their peers; ‘Lighthouse’ is a rip-roaring example of how to pen an ear-wormer.

Having previously played at The Great Escape, the quintet have also received spins on BBC Introducing and are set to continue gigging throughout the rest of the year with, we dare say, a few festival slots thrown in to boot.

Tara – ‘Stars’
Tara is an Irish/Australian singer songwriter who has chosen Dublin as her new home because of her father’s deep Irish roots. With the help of her musicians, Anthony McMahon, Paul Flood and Ally Donald, Tara manages to channel her ideas live on stage and together they create something quite dynamic. She’s played at the Whelan’s Ones To Watch Festival and was voted Gig Of The Week by the Irish Times.

With Tara having been likened to the likes of Sia, Delilah, Corinne Bailey-Rae and Shakespear’s Sister, ‘Stars’ is something of a sonic journey and sounds like a dreamy perception of Tara’s reality -her ability to mould soft and ambient soundscapes with an energetic coating of electric guitars.

James Holt – ‘Whatever Happened to John?’

James Holt is a singer-songwriter from Manchester, currently in his final year studying music at the University of Salford. James plays piano, guitar and cello, as well as recording and writing all his own music. Citing his biggest inspirations as The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Radiohead, James has recently been played on BBC Radio Manchester and been featured on Tom Robinson’s ‘Fresh On the Net'.

Our chosen track, James tells us was “inspired by a Sky Arts playhouse drama called 'Snodgrass'.  It was an alternate reality comedy/drama about John Lennon, who in 1962 left The Beatles and was doomed to obscurity. I found the idea of the alternate reality and twist of fate fascinating.”

James is currently busying himself with writing and recording and is keen to get out there on the live circuit and also get some festival slots under his belt.

LST – ‘One Wish’

Leigh Samuel Taylor aka LST is singer-songwriter/MC from Southampton. Originally starting his musical career off working the club circuit across the UK, LST soon found his sound evolving into a delectable blend of Indie Rock, Electronica and Acoustic Soul. By taking his performances to the next level LST was able to win 'Road To Blissfields' outright and perform in the BBC Introducing live Lounge.

In the last year LST has been nominated as 'Best Male Solo Act' at the Best Of British Unsigned Music Awards and also been acknowledged by the UK’s frontline broadcasting outfits like BBC Introducing, 6Music & was named 'Homegrown Artist Of The Week' by DJ Target on 1Xtra. And it’s clearly paid off as following this he was also hand-picked by jazz superstar Jamie Cullum and BBC Introducing teams to support Jamie on his Momentum tour across the UK.
