Trouble at the Mill? Not a chance...

I have to admit, I was hardly on the cutting edge when it came to discovering Islington Mill – I only discovered it when the buzz surrounding residents The Ting Tings drew me in a few years ago (but I bet I wasn’t the only one who’d never heard of the place before then).

The Victorian former cotton mill building was rescued by Bill Campbell back in 2001, with the aim of transforming it into a creative space that local artists could use to both create and exhibit their work.

The transition has been gradual, but the mill, now a fully fledged gig venue with its own fancy website, is most definitely underground no longer - it now houses over 50 artists’ studios, two art galleries, a recording studio and club space. The most recent positive development is that the whole ground floor was given an overhaul during the summer, so it’s now more gig friendly than in the past (surely no one will miss those toilets…)

Islington Mill’s appeal to musicians doesn’t end there, though - there are numerous spaces in the building that can be used for rehearsals and even photoshoots and filming. If you haven’t been down recently (or if you’re even further behind the times than me and have never been), then it’s time you discovered the new, improved Islington Mill.
