Getting friendly with your local promoter is always a good idea. A competent, diligent promoter should also usually be prepared to give a traveling band a gig, as long as the economics stack-up.
By working hard to develop your audience in your home town, you are more likely to be offered better gigs and possibly be booked by promoters as a support act to a touring band, and therefore benefit from the promotion and play to proportion of their audience as a result.
The Unsigned Guide lists over 300 independent promoters throughout the UK and London as well as 32 other sections including record labels, publishing companies, management companies, recording studios, pluggers, radio stations and distributors...

Each entry contains promoter contact information and the venues & clubs for which they are booking gigs. |
