A brand new independent label has arrived in town.
Modern English, which describes itself as Manchester's new digital and interactive record label for the 21st Century, officially launched this month.
Headed up by the inimitable John Robb and producer Johnny Jay, Modern English currently has four acts on its roster – 1913, Micky P Kerr, Thallie and Call Me Animal. They’re looking to sign up more in the none too distant future and, as such, are actively encouraging artistic types from the city to approach them with their ideas.
The press release for the label reads more like a manifesto: “Modern English is more than just a record label - it’s a way of life. Modern English is the soundtrack to a new England. Modern English sets out to define English culture in these wild and fractured times. Modern English is multicultural England- its the mish mash of indie guitars with dub nicked of your dad's records and hip hop copped from the internet. It's poetry. It's songs for a generation. It's the sound of piss and vinegar, English skies and the thrill of being alive. It's concrete and clouds, it's a wild night out, it's the soundtrack to this mongrel nation. We Are The Modern English!”
A bold statement of intent there, but we suspect these two ar emore than capable of living up to it.
There’s not a lot of information on the label on the website at present, but expect to hear a good deal more soon…
