Band of the fortnight: The Answering Machine
Knowledge is power, so arm yourself with some top advice from the Manchester bands who are leading the way…
Gemma Evans from The Answering Machine tells us what she’s learned.
Favourite Manchester bands: Dutch Uncles, Airship.
Have you found the Manchester music scene supportive?
Extremely so. The whole scene is highly eclectic but largely centred around a community. The relationship between promoters, club nights, bands and DJs is a bit of a melting pot, with many of the roles crossing over and people being involved with all aspects of music. This leads to a very dynamic and creative scene with room for a lot of collaboration.
What’s your top tip for bands trying to make in this city and beyond?
Play every show you get offered; you never know who's going to be watching. Be innovative and media literate, and remember that plenty of opportunities lie in remixing and DJ-ing - it helps spread your name about and forge new relationships.
What’s next for you?
We’re playing a festival in Japan called British Anthems - we won a competition in Rolling Stone Japan to go play in Tokyo.
