Disastrous consequences
Manchester has never been short of creative types willing to enter into clever artistic experiments, but it’s getting these sorts of things together that can prove the sticking point. Given that there are currently many fantastic new bands emerging from our city, thank god that someone’s taking the initiative…
That someone is Dan Parrott, the man who was responsible for the music programming at Channel M before its excellent original music shows were cruelly cut from the schedule. His new project is Love & Disaster, a music and media company focusing on record releases, music videos and television production, and his first course of action has been to assemble some of Manchester’s best new acts and pop their stuff on to one handy EP.
‘Love & Disaster 1’ features contributions from Airship, Dutch Uncles, Jo Rose and Delphic, plus Everything Everything on remixing duties. The company are setting out their stall from the get go; the press release ever so eloquently states that: “Although Manchester has enjoyed recent success from bands such as The Ting Tings, The Courteeners and the meteoric return of Elbow it has been a while since the city has enjoyed a real progressive and identifiable scene. The next generation of young bands have their sights set firmly on the future without harking back to Manchester clichés. This record is more than the sum of its parts; it’s a collaborative effort by the people and artists that are going to make Manchester a focal point for new music in 2010.”
The ‘Love & Disaster 1’ EP is proof that the Manchester scene is not only still going strong, but that it is as mutually supportive and innovative as ever. It’s out on January 11 so do your bit by going out and getting a copy. We’re already looking forward to what Love & Disaster will come up with next, and you should too.
