Sound Control: coming soon
With Manchester’s newest gig venue Sound Control due to open its doors for a special Sneak Peek Party this Wednesday, we ask Ben Taylor what we can expect from the latest edition to the city’s emerging ‘Southern Quarter’.
How did the idea to open this new venue come about?
The building itself has been run as a music store for the past 30 years - originally as A1 Music, then Academy Of Sound and, more recently, under the Sound Control name – so most musicians in Manchester will have been through the doors and left with a bill for a new guitar or the like.
Andrew O' Dwyer is behind the idea of re-opening Sound Control as a venue, and once you step inside you'll think the building was made for being a live music club. It really is bizarre, especially as the place originally started out as a milk factory!
What’s the ethos behind Sound Control and what will you be offering that other venues in Manchester don’t?
We're fairly unique in the fact that we have 3 floors; up top you'll find our live music room which can hold 450, in the middle we have a feeder bar and in the basement you'll find our club space with room for 350.
In terms of genre we won't be stamping down that we are an 'indie' venue or a 'dance' club, and we will be opening up the venue to all sorts of folk. We'll be hosting art shows, fashion shows, screenings, live shows, clubnights, album playback and much, much more.
What kind of events/gigs has you got lined up?
Following on from the Sneak Peek Party, we'll be open on the last weekend before Christmas with a Delphic post gig, Revolver DJs, Xfm DJs and a few secret guests. Then, on New Years’ Eve, we’re putting on a 3 floor bonanza featuring some of Manchester's favourite artists, some of which is a little hush hush at the minute.
Then we launch in a BIG way in January; more on that very soon…
Are all gigs going to be run by promoters or are you willing for unsigned bands to approach you directly?
There will mainly be a lot of touring shows coming through the door. However, I'm happy to have a listen to everyone, the more music the better. I'm running a monthly unsigned night called 'nowayback!' and am always on the lookout for bands for that. From time to time there will be support slots with some touring bands up for grabs too.
Entrance to the Sneak Peek Party featuring Kid British and The Switch, is by invite only.
The aftershow party at Subspace is open to all.
